Ross Brawn Return To F1?

Will Ross Brawn return to F1? Ross Brawn, the former Mercedes Boss and Ferrari Technical Director has been rumoured to have signed a deal with F1’s new owner – Liberty Media to run the sporting side of Formula 1.

According to various reports, it seems that the FIA (Motorsport’s Governing Body) has now approved the deal between Brawn and LM (Liberty Media) but nothing has been said about when Ross Brawn will be taking up the new role.

Rumours have been surrounding Ross Brawn with a return to Formula 1 for some months now – even before summer and things were fuelled even more when he said the following in an interview with the Daily Telegraph – “I would never go back to a team. I have done everything I can in a team – I would just be going back and repeating myself.

Trying to help F1 become a better F1 – that would be appealing to me. It would be the one thing that could be interesting.”

If you ask me about what Formula 1 needs – it’s a plan. A three-year and a five-year plan. That’s my take. We haven’t got the ideal structure for creating that plan and implementing it over time.

The current FIA boss is Jean Todt – many of you will know that the two worked closely alongside each other during their time at Ferrari. Jean Todt ran the Scuderia Ferrari team and Ross Brawn was the Technical Director up until 2006.

As some reports are suggesting, this deal doesn’t mean that Ross Brawn will be “taking over” from Bernie Ecclestone – it just means that he will be overlooking and managing the sporting side of Formula 1.

Bernie Ecclestone is still the key figure that’s responsible for the deals on the commercial side whereas (if reports are to be believed about the new deal/role) Brawn will be handling other aspects such as negotiating and liaising between F1 teams and also the FIA.

About Ross Brawn – Ross Brawn Return To F1?

If you’re someone who doesn’t really follow F1, you’ll have seen Ross Brawn regularly featured within the sport – he was (and still is) a key figure in F1.

Many people will associate him as being the Technical Director at the Scuderia Ferrari team however his career started back in the 1970’s when he was a mechanic in Formula 3!

Working his way up the ladder and within different teams, he ended up having his own team (Brawn GP) participating in Formula 1 when the manufacturer he was partnering with at the time (Honda) withdrew from the sport leading him to a buyout up until Mercedes took over.

He then announced his retirement at the end of 2013.

Since then, rumours have always been on about Ross Brawn and his return to Formula 1 but more often that not, they’ve been denied – until now.

If this deal is to be believed, this will be a good move for the sport. It’s nice to see a key figure like Ross Brawn return to Formula 1. He’s been successful and hopefully this will bring along a new structure, a new edge and of course – new ideas which is what we need.

More to follow.
