What We Know About The Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix – History
Did you know that the Austrian Grand Prix has been held in two different locations in Spielberg?
In 1958, the race was held in an airfield in the town of Zeltweg, in Spielberg, continuing to race there for the following two years.
In 1959 and 1960 the circuit then hosted the Formula Two Championship with the organisers dreaming of hosting the Formula One World Championship however in 1961 till 1963 – they staged non-championship events proving popular amongst drivers and fans.
From 1970 till 1987, racing commenced on the Osterreichring circuit (translated literally to ‘Austrian Circuit’) – a fast flowing track with plenty of high-speed corners, elevation which became the designated, European Grand Prix.
Fast forward to 2013 – this is when the new circuit owners, Red Bull, reached an agreement with Bernie Ecclestone to bring back the Austrian Grand Prix to the Formula 1 calendar after being absent for the past 10 years.
