The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix had quite the start and the talking point is the accident between Sergio Perez, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg.

All three of them were forced out of the Grand Prix and spoke to the media, following the accident on the opening lap which resulted in a red flag for the race.

Starting with the Red Bull driver of Sergio Perez, he had a good start and navigated his way through the first corner, easing off on other drivers around him and navigating his way through round the first corner.

On his right hand side, we can see onboard that he notices Kevin Magnussen who has made his way past his team-mate of Nico Hulkenberg and gaining position.

Not backing out, Magnussen remains in the same place, on the right hand side of Perez both of which run out of room and clip each other resulting in a collision – can be seen in a video further below.

Hulkenberg, the team-mate of Kevin Magnussen, sees the accident and tries to make his way through, avoiding the situation and just when he thought he had cleared the drivers, he gets clipped by Perez – ending his race.

There has been a lot of discussion as to who is to blame and initially when I saw the onboard, my thoughts were that Magnussen should get the blame fully.

However, after seeing the onboard of Perez, who sees and knows that Magnussen is right alongside him, he could have moved to the left slightly to allow some room – potentially avoiding the accident.

Both drivers are at fault, more so Magnussen however with experience and the fact that Perez knew that Magnussen was on his right-hand side, he should have moved left slightly instead of completely closing the gap.

Nico Hulkenberg:Disappointed… Gutted, to be honest. To be out after 500 metres is obviously far from ideal – also both cars out. I got taken out by an incident that I wasn’t directly involved in, but obviously it’s quite narrow here, going up to Turn 3. A big shame, things were getting too tight there. I think somewhat a racing incident… It looked maybe a bit optimistic from Kevin, but I don’t know, Checo could have also maybe seen him and left room, so unfortunate, obviously, the outcome. We had a lot of damage, we had a very dangerous incident. It was a massive incident, and my car is completely destroyed.

Kevin Magnussen:I think I was with my front alongside Perez’s rear, from the exit of Turn 1 on the run up to Turn 3. He goes towards the wall, the wall comes a little bit back towards the track, and I had nowhere to go. I don’t know if he didn’t see me or what, but I can’t just disappear out of the blue. I made contact with the wall and him at the same time, and unfortunately we had a crash. It’s always frustrating. Also a crash like this is a big cost for the team, in terms of spare parts and having to make new parts – a lot of work for the guys. It’s never good.

Sergio Perez:I lost a position to one of the [Kick Saubers],” said Perez, as he began to explain his start. “It’s Lap 1, it’s just important if you are not in the right position, automatically you are going to end up losingI was getting out of the corner, I had basically… On my onboard there is no point where you see Kevin and I was just pretty surprised that he kept it flat at that point, because it was just very unnecessaryWe had a lot of damage, we had a very dangerous incident. It was a massive incident, and my car is completely destroyed.
