Is Nico Rosberg a worthy World Champion?

With the 2016 Formula 1 season now over, many people have been (and still are) discussing whether or not Nico Rosberg is a worthy World Champion.

No matter what’s being said in the media or what the opinions are of people – nothing can change the fact that Nico Rosberg has gotten the points required and is now a Formula 1 World Champion joining Damon Hill and his father, Graham Hill in the exclusive father and son club.

Looking back at the 2016 season, we all know that Lewis Hamilton was struck with a lot of unreliabilities – especially Malaysia. Without this failure, it’s more than likely that Hamilton would have been crowned World Champion again.

I won’t deny that this year was Nico Rosberg’s finest year in terms of his driving, his maturity and how he handled each race however I don’t think there was a strong (or fair) battle between the two title competitors.

Over the last couple of races we did see glimpses of some racing (Hello Verstappen) however I think teams are getting too involved in situations and we should take a step back and go to how things should be – proper racing.

The fans wants to see drivers pushing each other (and themselves) to the limits whilst having respect for one another and without the teams getting involved or telling drivers what to do.

When it comes to mechanical/safety issues – that’s fine but not when it comes to racing.

Let the drivers have freedom and take control of situations.

In previous years, Rosberg was undeniably hit with unreliabilities on his car too however so was his team-mate and the two team-mates did battle it out.

After the issue in Malaysia, Hamilton was definitely knocked down mentally and psychologically however once his car was reliable again he dominated the races as we saw.
He’s the only driver to have won 10 races in a season without winning the title itself.

This year, a lot of luck has played into Rosberg’s hands, it went his way and as I said above – he’s gotten the points and remained focused throughout the year however for me, Rosberg isn’t the top driver in Formula One.

Do I think Nico Rosberg is a worthy World Champion? No, I don’t think he is – there wasn’t a true battle for the title. There were little battles here and there however it’s not enough for the sport that is Formula 1.

Alonso, Hamilton, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Vettel and Raikkonen are top drivers in my opinion – they push the limits, they race (sometimes controversially) and they’ve definitely given us memorable moments.

As I said at the beginning of this post, no matter what I write and no matter what people think or say – Nico Rosberg has won the World Championship and nothing can change that fact. A big congratulations to him – it’s an achievement to be proud of.

have to agree with you with the last race it just showed that he isn’t a worthy champion. he didn’t try to do anything and he is not a true racer if he was he would have tried to do something instead of asking the team to help him.
Lewis handled the race and did what he had to do if there was any chance in winning the title and out of the two lewis is a worthy champion.
With all the problems he had he still managed to win races and especially the last few he was back on top as he always has been.
shame it didn’t work out for him but we all know what he can do. Rosberg scored points and got the title well done but Mercedes wanted it that way too i think

Thank you for your comment – it’s nice to see what people think and everyone has their own opinions! As you say, Rosberg scored the points and yes he is now world champion and did what he wanted to do as he’s now retiring from the sport so fair play to him! 🙂 xx
