Bahrain Grand Prix 2020 – “Participants Only Event”
The season hasn’t event started and we’re already looking to see which races will be affected by the Coronavirus outbreak.
With the Australian Grand Prix due to kick off the 2020 Formula 1 season, we already have the Chinese Grand Prix postponed (more than likely off the calendar) and today we have received the news that Bahrain will be a “participants-only event“.
What does this mean? It means that the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix will take place ‘behind closed doors’ so to speak, with no spectators attending the event.
The race will go ahead as a televised event but it will be a race like we’ve never seen!
2020 Bahrain Grand Prix – Statement for Bahrain
Statement: “In consultation with our international partners and the Kingdom’s national health task force, Bahrain has made the decision to hold this year’s Bahrain Grand prix as a participants event.”
“As an F1 host nation, balancing the welfare of supporters and race goers is a tremendous responsibility.”
“Given the continued spread of Covid-19 globally, convening a major sporting event which is open to the public and allows thousands of international travellers and local fans to interact in close proximity would not be the right thing to do at this present time.”
“To ensure that neither the sport, nor the global supporter base is unduly impacted, the race weekend itself will still go ahead as a televised event.”
As we know, this is now the second race to be affected by the outbreak and there’s a lot of talk surrounding the Vietnamese Grand prix too.
The Bahrain Grand Prix 2020 is due to take place from March 20th to the 22nd.
As mentioned above, this will now be held behind closed doors – making it a televised event.
Not only are race organisers looking at how to handle the outbreak, we also have news that German reporters will not be attending the first few races – keeping the the reporting based at the studios.
This is a first for the world of Formula 1 and we all have to wait and see how things will pan out for the 2020 season…
