No More Radio Restrictions In Formula 1

Yes! You’re reading this right  – the controversial radio ban which we’ve all been complaining about will now be ‘lifted’ ahead of the German Grand Prix this weekend.

The restrictions were brought in at the beginning of the season and were immediately unpopular and last week for the Hungarian Grand Prix, we saw that the rules had been pushed even further however without consistency. Some drivers getting penalised and others not.

After a meeting on Thursday (yesterday) there was an overwhelming amount of support from people such as Bernie Ecclestone, Jean Todt (FIA President) and many of the teams including – Mercedes, Force India, Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and Red Bull all joining forces to come together and lift the radio ban rules and regulations.

BUT – before you feel happy about the new ruling, it’s not exactly what we wanted! No, the radio ban being lifted now means that we will go back to the old way, you know – the way in which teams can tell their drivers anything……

Again, there does’t seem to be a balance in the rules, it’s either everything or nothing!

It’s a popular opinion that teams shouldn’t be allowed to tell their drivers everything. I don’t agree with teams guiding their drivers around the track and telling them what to look out for and what gear to be in – let drivers race and do their job.

What I do want to see is teams helping their drivers when it’s for safety issues (Jenson Button in Hungary) or when it’s setting issues (Lewis Hamilton in Baku).

Before jumping to conclusions about teams telling their drivers everything this weekend, I’m going to wait and see how it all evolves over the weekend at the German Grand Prix – will we be seeing more racing now that teams can tell their drivers more?
