It’s a sad day for Formula 1 as today, we found out that Charlie Whiting, the FIA Formula One Race Director had suddenly passed away in Australia.
Within the sport, he was well respected – not only by drivers and team member but with fans alike and even though people didn’t always approve of his decisions, he was always well-respected.
Playing a major part in every race – he was the Safety Delegate, the head of the F1 Technical Department and generally managed the logistics of each F1 Grand Prix. Along with this, he often inspected the cars in parc-ferme before a race and enforced the FIA rules along with controlling the lights at the start of each race.
For those who are relatively new to the sport, you will have heard many drivers mentioning Charlies over the team-radio – especially when stuck behind the safety car.
Following the news which was announced early in the morning, selected drivers attended the Thursday Press Conference (coming soon) with Sebastian Vettel sharing his sadness and expressing his thoughts, mentioning that he and Charlie had even gone for a track walk yesterday – pictured above.
