Fitness in F1 with Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button
Fitness in F1 – The McLaren-Honda drivers sit down to discuss driver fitness, the ups and downs of race weekends and what they need to do in order to remain healthy and strong during the season for race weekends.
All Formula 1 drivers have to go through intense training before and during the season which allows their bodies to cope with the different demands – physical demands, weather demands, especially when visiting hotter countries during the season.
The main focus remains on the neck, this is where most of the pressure occurs whilst driving, especially when cornering as the drivers head and helmet weighs much more due to the G-Force. Going through specially designed exercise regimes to build and develop the muscles in the neck.
Jenson explains that the first day of testing takes it’s toll on drivers – “after driving 100 laps, the next day your neck will be in agony.“
Not only do they focus on neck muscles, drivers also work on their arm muscles and core muscles as this is what keeps them going throughout a race.
Always finding a balance, they never actually build too much muscle as they need to remain slim for the cars minimum weight with Alonso saying “physically you need to train hard, you need to be fit and mentally you need to be strong for the moments with a lot of pressure.“
