2019 Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying – LIVE

Race & Location: 2019 Monaco Grand Prix. Monaco, Monte-Carlo

The weekend is just beginning as we get ready for the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying LIVE where you’ll be able to see driver interviews, updates and all the action as it happens.

This week, the Monaco Grand Prix has taken a more relaxed approach – teams and drivers paying their respects for Niki Lauda who passed away on Monday evening. Many drivers have opted to change their helmet designs for the weekend and Mercedes-AMG Petronas have also added a red feature to their livery which you can see below.

Here are some mentions for Niki Lauda throughout the weekend.

Valtteri Bottas: “We lost one of the biggest people in the sport. He would be happy to speak to you and was a major part of the team. He would want us to go out there and kick *** so we will try and do that for him.”

Charles Leclerc: “What he achieved after his accident and achieved so much success, yes, he’s an example for us all and he will be remembered and respected in the sport.”

Max Verstappen: “He was a great guy, I respected him a lot and he was always happy to speak to you. He was a character and a really nice guy to be around.”

Sebastian Vettel: “He was a true character, honest, open and very well respected. He’s leaving a big gap in the community and that’s something that we will not be able to fill in Formula 1.”

Toto Wolff: “As you can imagine, this is all very difficult for us as a team and as a friend. It’s one thing that the world and the Formula 1 community has lost an icon but it’s totally different and much more difficult when you lose a friend.”

There’s last minute work ongoing in all garages – especially Mercedes and Ferrari as we get ready for Qualifying.

Q1 – MONACO GRAND PRIX QUALIFYING

Drivers are making their way out on track as the pit lane is now open. For those of you who are relatively new to the sport, the Monaco Grand Prix circuit is considered to be one of the most difficult due to the fact it’s a street-circuit.

This is why Qualifying plays a major part in the race.

Sebastian Vettel thanking the team over the radio for getting the car ready on time – he had an accident in Practice 3 and the team spent their lunch-break getting his car ready for Qualifying.

In the meantime, take a look at this tweet from Aston Martin Red Bull Racing….. they’re spying on their ex-driver, Sebastian Vettel!

There’s traffic on the track – including a little hold up between Antonio Giovinazzi and Nico Hulkenberg.

(The stewards are now looking at the incident between Giovinazzi and Hulkenberg)

Charles Leclerc making his way round the circuit – he’s sets a time for third fastest.

The Aston Martin Red Bull Racing team are always strong in Monaco and their drivers were 1-2 before the Mercedes of Bottas set the fastest lap time.

Oh dear – Vettel hits the wall and he’s compromised as he’s currently down in P15. Will he have enough time?

Lewis Hamilton is at the top of the timesheets, followed by Valtteri Bottas in P2.

Sebastian Vettel making his way round the circuit…… the tension!

Oh! Charles Leclerc is OUT of Qualifying as Sebastian Vettel goes quickest overall. Success for one driver – a terrible result for their other driver.

WHY didn’t Ferrari let Leclerc go out again? What is the team doing? Charles Leclerc not happy (understandably) shaking his head and asking the team why he wasn’t out on track.

Q2 – 2019 MONACO GRAND PRIX QUALIFYING

Drivers are now making their way back out onto the track for Q2. It was a close call for Sebastian Vettel in terms of his incident (touching the wall) and an unlucky turn for his team-mate, Charles Leclerc who’s out of Qualifying.

Mercedes are now setting the fastest lap times with Valtteri Bottas setting the fastest lap time overall, an all-time record, of 1:10.701

Lewis Hamilton in P2 however as I’m typing, Max Verstappen just goes faster than Lewis Hamilton taking P2 – for now.

(How beautiful is this photo below? From Red Bull Racing)

Lewis Hamilton now goes second fastest again – at the moment, Valtteri Bottas is right at the top of the timesheets setting a great lap time. He hasn’t been strong at Monaco but 2019 Valtteri Bottas has found the confidence…

Drivers are randomly being checked – Lewis Hamilton’s car being weighed as he comes into the pits.

Verstappen now goes first fastest – he’s looking strong but both Bottas and Hamilton are looking fast as they go round the circuit again….

The Mercedes drop back slightly and come into the pits instead.

Grosjean not a happy driver – his radio call to the radio was all bleeped out! This was due to Pierre Gasly holding him up.

Charles Leclerc: “I asked the team whether they were sure about not going out and they said they are sure. I asked again if we need to go out again and I didn’t get a reply so I thought that they were sure – this is a hard one to take. We had plenty of time and I need some explanations.”

“Tomorrow, I’ll need to take a lot of risks – maybe even risking to crash and make the overtakes. Hopefully we will be able to do something tomorrow.”

Charles Leclerc making his way to the motorhome but still taking the time to sign autographs and taking photos with fans.

Q3 – 2019 MONACO GRAND PRIX QUALIFYING LIVE

monaco-qualifying-2019

Drivers are now ready and making their way out onto the track for the final Qualifying session ahead of the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix tomorrow.

Who will be fastest? Who will be on pole…. let’s find out….

Valtteri Bottas now sets the fastest lap time – setting a new track record of 1:10.252

Vettel is second fastest however Max Verstappen now making his way round the circuit and going round the last few corners – he’s now second fastest moving Sebastian Vettel to P3.

Lewis Hamilton now second fastest.

Valtteri Bottas is looking strong at the moment – he’s the one setting the fastest lap times, overall.

Sebastian Vettel has been pushing and hits the barrier – he hits the barrier again! It seems like every-time he pushes, he pushes too far.

Lewis Hamilton now crosses the line – he’s on pole! Valtteri Bottas comes into the pits, he lost time through his lap and came in earlier.

Lewis Hamilton on pole for the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix!

Team to Hamilton: “Well, er – that’s pole position mate!”

Hamilton: “YES! THAT’S WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!” It’s safe to say that he’s a happy driver.

Sebastian Vettel outside the top 3.

Lewis Hamilton: “This is incredible. Firstly, I want to say a big thank you to the crowd – this is my home and I love it. It doesn’t matter how many times you come here – it’s just a dream and this is a dream. It’s been a great battle with Valtteri and there’s always this will, this desire. This means so much to me and I’m really grateful that I managed to do this.”

Lewis Hamilton: “We have a great package but we drivers take the car to the limit. It’s like wrestling a bull or whatever you want to say – the laps are hard and you’re battling with the car but I just managed to pull it off. I lost things on the last corner but I’ll take it – it’s perfect.”

Valtteri Bottas: “I’m disappointed. I feel like there was plenty of places where I could improve but I didn’t get the tyres hot enough so that’s where I lost it. Anything can happen – it would be nice to be on pole but there’s no point in giving up – you need to do the best you can.”

Max Verstappen: “I think anyway, the Mercedes were a little bit too quick. I lost it on turn one and overall on these streets – when you push, your heart is in your chest. The mechanics have done a great job today for the car and I’m very happy with the results.”

Toto Wolff: “It’s a shame for Charles, he had it in him to be fighting for the front row but for us, we struggled a little bit with the tyres but it all came together in the end so we’re all really happy. Valtteri had a sensational lap but he hit traffic and I felt like I heard he mention there was traffic on the radio. I heard that there will be rain tomorrow – as long as it’s exciting and I hope that we win.”

More coming this evening.
