Race Weekend: Formula 1 2018 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix

Location: Singapore

It’s here – the night race, the Singapore Grand Prix. Drivers are now out on the track parade and getting ready for the race ahead, drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated as this is one of the most challenging tracks of the year.

Did you know drivers lose up to 3 kilos of water during the race?

Sebastian Vettel: “It’s getting darker and darker, people are already on the Grandstands, this is one of the best races of the year so I’m really looking forward to it. I don’t know what I need to do – it all depends on the start and the first few laps along with tyre management. We have a good car and this is a long race so let’s see what happens. I think we have the pace to do well and hopefully we can find ourselves at the front at some point.”

Charles Leclerc: “It’s weird but I don’t feel the pressure. I think a lot of people think that I feel the pressure but I don’t feel it at all. I just want to do the best job possible as this is a dream come true. In terms of team-mates, I think we are allowed to race each other – without crashing but we can definitely race each other.”

The pit lane is now open and drivers are making their way out of the garages. Some drivers are stopping at the end of the pit-lane whilst others are going straight onto the track and making their way round to the grid.

The atmosphere is building and the grandstands are full. Weather is warm and humid and drivers are making sure they’re staying hydrated.

Cars are now all on the grid – some drivers are back in the garages to stay cool before they make their way back onto the grid for the national anthem!

Lewis Hamilton now sets a new track record.

He’s pushing the car and it looks like he’s trying to build a gap to Vettel in order to come into the pits sooner rather than later.

Lap 15

Sebastian Vettel comes into the pits – Lewis Hamilton stays out.

Hamilton sets another track record.

Team to Vettel: “Give all you have”

Team to Hamilton: “Box, box!”

Lap 16

Lewis Hamilton comes back out onto the track – he’s in front of Perez and Vettel.

Lap 17

Sebastian Vettel now makes his way past Perez.

Valtteri Bottas comes into the pits following Ferrari who looked like they were bringing Raikkonen in – they didn’t.

Max Verstappen now comes into the pits. Raikkonen now leads the race.

Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel come close together but don’t touch! Verstappen is in front of Vettel!!!

Team to Versteppen: “OK, now calm down – it’s a long race.”

Lap 19

Kevin Magnussen now setting a new lap record – he’s gone onto fresh tyres.

Lap 53

Bottas – Raikkonen – Ricciardo this is the little train we’re looking at right now as it’s close between all three drivers but there’s not enough to allow overtaking.

Lap 56

Bottas asking about the back markers and the blue flag signal not going on to allow Bottas to make his way past with no issues.

There needs to be a 1.2 second gap for the flag to be shown to the back markers.

It’s still Bottas, Raikkonen and Ricciardo at the moment but it’s closer between them.

Lap 60

Drivers are now making their way round the circuit and getting ready for the final lap – the Bottas, Raikkonen and Ricciardo train has stayed the same and they’re still behind Hulkenberg too.

FINAL LAP for the Singapore Grand Prix

Drivers are now making their way round the circuit and as things stand, we’ll be ending the race with Hamilton, Verstappen and Vettel in the same places as they started the race. The top 6 drivers are ending the race how they started.

Brief Driver Interviews

Lewis Hamilton: “I had such great support here – I had a great start and the team did such a good job – always supporting me and Valtteri.”

“This felt like the longest race of my life. What a day, what a weekend – super blessed. I felt lucky with the traffic as they were moving around and then at one point, the guys weren’t letting me by so my heart was in my mouth.”

“A big thank you to the team for all their support and belief in me and Valtteri.”

Max Verstappen: “The team had a great strategy so we managed to get back to second place and we tried to close the gap but in the end, we took second as this is where we thought we would be good. We tried to handle the car with the issues but very happy with second.”

Sebastian Vettel: “Overall, we were not fast enough – we didn’t have the pace in the race and we tried to be aggressive in the beginning but that didn’t work out. I wasn’t convinced with the tyres but pitting wasn’t an option so we tried to make do with what we had. Obviously, I’m mostly thinking about today’s race and the way we raced – we didn’t really have a chance.”

“This weekend I said the only ones we can beat is ourselves and we didn’t have the pace today.”

There’s lots more on the way including the press conference, driver interviews / team reaction and plenty of photos so make sure you check back for all the latest!
