We’re getting ready for the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix and today – the sun is shining! As you know, following the wonderful lap he put together yesterday in the Austrian Qualifying, Valtteri Bottas will be starting the race from pole . Sebastian Vettel will be starting the race from sixth.

NEWS – Fernando Alonso will be starting the race from the pit-lane. McLaren fitted an old spec front-wing to his car following the damage and as this breaches regulations, he will be starting from the pit-lane.

The Austrian Grand Prix is the shortest lap of the year however, it looks like we’ll have a great race on our hands as everyone is determined and ready to push their cars.

Toto Wolff: “It’s much hotter than expected – the track temperature is about 10 degrees more which changes the tyre strategy. When we qualify in the front, we always have a chat in the morning and go through everything.”

The drivers are now lined up at the front of the grid for the national anthem.

Last minute chats for the drivers with their engineers before they get into their cars for the race.

Tyre Choices – Soft, Supersoft and Ultrasoft


 Drivers are now making their way round the circuit for the formation lap – getting their tyres ready for the start of the race.

Team to Hamilton: “We’re still reading 47 degrees so no real change. The weather will be like this and then get cooler towards the end of the race.”

Fernando Alonso is in his car and waiting to start the race from the pit-lane.

Drivers are now lining up on the grid.

Lap 1

Lights out!

Both Ferrari’s go off the grid – Bottas loses a place – it’s Hamilton in the lead!

Vettel loses a place and is back down into P8.

Verstappen is up into P3 making his way past Raikkonen who went off-grid.

A good start to begin with for both Ferrari’s however the went off the track further on the circuit and lost places.

Lap 3

Hamilton: “A lot of debris down in turn 3” – Hamilton now sets the fastest lap time and what a start it was from him.

Both Ferrari’s lost places due to their start – the both left the track losing places.

Sebastian now makes his way back up into P6.

Lap 4

Vettel has just started to gain on Ricciardo.

Lap 9

Lewis Hamilton setting another fastest lap – he’s controlling the race.

Ricciardo has now started to gain on Raikkonen.

Raikkonen: “I think the Red Bull hit me on the rear – check.”

Lap 11

Alonso: “Can you think about the strategy or something… I will not be 71 laps here…”

Lap 13

Hulkenberg’s car is on fire – he’s out of the race.


Lap 14

Bottas has an issue with his car – he’s slowing down and out of the race.

Team to Bottas: “My gear box has gone…. my gear box….”



Both the Red Bull’s come into the pit for a tyre change – along with Ferrari which means that they could go to the end of the race!

Lewis Hamilton has not come into the pits.

Lap 16

Virtual Safety Car is ending.

Lap 17

Team to Versteppen: “OK so Hamilton did not pit – we’re within his pit window.”

Lewis Hamilton now sets the fastest lap time.

Daniel Ricciardo now sets the fastest lap time.

Lap 18

The team are praising Vettel.

Hulkenberg and Bottas are out of the race.

Lap 19

Ricciardo makes his way past Raikkonen in a good move.

Team to Ricciardo: “Good job!”

Lap 23

The team telling Hamilton to find 8 seconds to cover the gap to Verstappen.

Hamilton: “8 seconds!?”

Hamilton saying it’s unlikely that he can find 8 seconds with the current tyres he’s on.

Lap 25

The pressure is on for Mercedes and Hamilton who also need to manage their car.

 Team to Ricciardo: “It looks like Hamilton will attack at the end.”

Hamilton comes in the pits.

Lap 26

Sebastian Vettel pushes and sets a fastest lap time however Hamilton comes out just in front of Vettel.

Verstapen, Ricciardo and Raikkonen are now the top 3 drivers.

Lap 28

A battle between Leclerc and Stroll – Leclerc tries to make his way past however Stroll just remains in the lead but it’s an ongoing battle.

Lap 31

There’s a little argument going on between Hamilton’s team and himself with Hamilton saying: “I would say something but just leave me to it Bono.” (His race engineer).

Lap 32

Hamilton: “I feel like I’m losing power!”


Lap 34

Raikkonen: “The Red Bull has a blister on the tyre.”

Team to Raikkonen: “Push Kimi, Push”

 Lap 36

Vettel has gained and closed the gap to Hamilton – putting the pressure on him. He’s within DRS range.

Raikkonen has also closed the gap to Ricciardo.

Lap 37

Raikkonen right behind but couldn’t make his way past Ricciardo.

Lap 38

Raikkonen now makes his way past Ricciardo.

Team to Ricciardo: “It’s getting really bad now” He’s struggling on the tyres.

Lap 39

Ricciardo now comes into the pits for a tyre change – he goes onto the super soft tyres.

Vettel now makes his way past Hamilton in a very close move.

Hamilton: “I just don’t get it guys, I can’t make it past these guys. We’re throwing away the win.”

Team to Hamilton: “Lewis, it’s James, I have thrown away the win today – you can gain places, we trust in you and believe in you. I’m sorry.”

Lap 42

Ferrari and Red Bull are both looking stronger now but check this team radio below.

Team to Raikkonen: “Red Bull are getting blistering, we are not.”

Team to Ricciardo: “Other people are starting to get blistering, keep going.”

Lap 44

Lewis Hamilton is starting to gain again on Sebastian Vettel – he does have blistering on his tyres though.

Lap 45

 Hamilton: “I’m on it again, I’m staying out and trying to get past this guy” (He’s talking about Vettel)

Team to Hamilton: “OK Lewis, we’ll leave you to it.”

Lap 46

Lewis Hamilton now setting the fastest lap time.

Team to Verstappen: “Everyone is nursing their cars…”

Verstappen: “Ok, well I’m feeling good so don’t worry about me.”

Lap 53

Hamilton comes into the pits – he’s back out in P5 and battling for P4. He’s on fresh tyres now and if any other drivers come into pits, he could gain places.

Ricciardo is OUT due to a mechanical fault.

Lewis Hamilton now sets the fastest lap time.

Hartley is OUT of the race.

There’s problems everywhere.

It’s Verstappen who’s leading the race followed by Raikkonen, Vettel and Hamilton.

Sebastian Vettel now sets the fastest lap time.

Lap 59

Lewis Hamilton now putting his foot down and setting good sectors.

He now sets the fastest lap time with a –  1:07.241

Lap 60

Verstappen leading the race – everyone is managing their tyres however Hamilton and Vettel are both setting good lap times. Hamilton putting the pressure on Vettel.

Lap 62

Team to Raikkonen: “You are free to push now.”

Fernando Alonso has made it into the points, he’s in P10 – a good result considering where he started and the car he has.

Lap 64

Hamilton goes off track!

Hamilton: “I’ve lost power.”

Team to Hamilton: “Stop, stop.”

Lewis Hamilton is OUT of the race. An engine failure.

Lap 65

 Both Mercedes are OUT.

Lap 69

With 3 laps to go, Verstappen is in the lead and controlling the race. He has a lot of support here and the crowds are all watching.

It’s Verstappen, Raikkonen and Vettel who are the top 3 drivers however Vettel has started to close the gap to his team-mate.


With Raikkonen and Vettel in P2 and P3.

The support for Max Verstappen is rather overwhelming and it’s a great result for the team as it’s their home Grand Prix.

Team to Versteppen: “Spot on Max.”

Verstappen: “This is amazing – to win at the Red Bull Ring with the Red Bull!”

Verstappen: “We managed to hang on until the end and to win here with a Red Bull at the Red Bull ring is amazing. It’s a good day for me and I hope that we can continue like this.”

Raikkonen: “Yeah I had to back off a little bit at the start because I was squeezed together and I was scared that I would get hit and then I ran wide but we took it easy and it’s a shame as we had a great car. Some of the points were a little bit difficult but a good result for the team.”

Vettel: “We were chasing him down at the end but couldn’t quite make it. Obviously, it would have been nice to start further up and then I went wide and lost places and lost some momentum and ground so it was damage limitation today, the tyres were OK and it could have been a better day but overall good.”
